Most products don’t fail because the product isn’t good. They fail because the magic never makes it to market.
In my experience, here are three reasons why, and how to keep it alive from development to launch.
1: When Process Smothers the Spark
First, the story gets diluted.
A scientist discovers something interesting. An engineer solves a meaningful problem. A team looks at it and says:
“Damn. We might be onto something here.”
Then the factory starts.
Management reviews. More management reviews. Agency briefings. Lawyers. Stakeholder feedback.
By the time the product reaches consumers, the original spark is snuffed under a blanket of process.
2: Everything Becomes Nothing
Second, teams try to say everything.
The product has dozens of benefits.
Dozens of reasons to believe. Dozens of interesting attributes.
So, the team shares all of them. And the most important one disappears.
“It does everything.” Which often sounds a lot like: “It does nothing special.”
The best products aren’t memorable because they have one benefit.
They’re memorable because they have one benefit people remember.
3: The Magic Gets Lost
And third…
This is the one people miss.
When a team doesn’t know the story early, it becomes much harder to defend the magic.
A unique ingredient. An unusual format. A bold claim. A strange texture.
A tradeoff that makes the product better for the right user.
Without a clear story, those things look like risks.
So, they get softened. Removed. Optimized. Until the product becomes easier to approve…and less worth launching.
Build the Story Early
The best teams do something different.
They formulate the hook early. Not after the product is finished. Not during advertising development.
In the lab.
While the product is still being built.
There’s a moment when the scientists, engineers, marketers, and innovators all feel it.
“Damn. We might be onto something magical here.”
Passing the Torch
And then something important happens. The flame gets passed.
From scientist to marketer, marketer to designer, designer to leadership, leadership to legal.
Team to team. Decision to decision. Like the Olympic torch.
Not protected by one person. Protected by everyone.
Because once that spark is clear, it becomes more than a communication tool.
It becomes a decision-making tool. A filter.
A rallying cry. A reason to fight for the things that make the product special.
Carrying It All the Way to Market
The best organizations don’t just build great products.
They carry the flame all the way to market.
Because it’s awfully hard for consumers to feel the WOW…when the WOW never makes it out of the lab.
